What Is Y2K Fashion

Double denim, patterned mesh, velour velvet, and sequins may be some of the prints and textures that come to mind in early 2000s fashion – informally known as Y2K fashion.

So this year, it became clear to us: more Y2K fashion. Trends throughout 2023 include new, stronger, 2000s-era staples, such as ballet flats, low-rise jeans, ribbed tanks as statement pieces, unbuttoned pants, cinched belts at the hips, and a peek-a-boo bra. included. While this is all new to young fashion fanatics, some older millennials have done a double take.

As this year’s Y2K fashion trends take their last, swiftest breaths۔ It takes a tough guy to make it into the Zeitgeist once, but a legend to do it twice. As always, I encourage you to continue wearing what feels right for you and your style, here are the Y2K trends that got a second chance at life in 2023.

You can even call ballet flats a beautiful cruelty. You should wear it with care. In their first iteration years ago, sweaty feet were slipping into smelly slippers and there was a complete lack of arch support. We are, now, a wiser bunch. This time, we choose to wear them with precious little crew socks, and the smarter ones among us have almost, if not completely, stepped into orthopedic flats.

What was more liberating than wearing a white tank top with black bra straps? Speaking from experience, nothing. One can imagine how Sidney Sweeney, Scarlett Johansson, or Rosie Huntington-Whiteley felt when they wore dresses to the Cannes Film Festival that exposed their bras through their necklines. was Zoe Saldana wore a similar silhouette to the Oscars by Fendi.

While all of their looks sparked controversy online (are you going to let the world in on the big, giant secret that women wear underwear?!?!), the sneak peek that preceded it, was unusual for queens. It’s always a little funny how whenever this trend comes out, it gets a lot of attention and a lot of pearl clutches. Surprise, people wear bad!

This year, Jeremy Allen White turned this fashion into a lifestyle.  This man is figuratively carrying tank tops on his back. There’s no place where the image of him and his generously bulbous arms doesn’t match a real shirt with a tiny undershirt.

Introducing New York’s drill rap scene. Popularizing the term “munch”, gourmet Dunkin’ drinks, and most importantly, making us all juicy and memorable couture suits. The certified New York princess is very famous for her juicy sweatsuits. Even wore them to my photo shoot for our fashion issue earlier this year, and I understand why.

Wearing a little velour or terrycloth sweatsuit that says “juicy” splashes on both your back and butt feels both comfortable and empowering. They serve no purpose beyond comfort: you can’t work in them, you can’t be too active because of their waist, and you can’t be too tight with them because of the rhinestones. Pop off any second, and yet, they persist.

Bella Hadid turned the trend upside down last year when she was photographed eating pizza-wearing platform Uggs. The boots sold out instantly and the moment paved the way for a complete Ugg renaissance.

This year, I’ve seen both slipper-esque shoes reclaim their place as comfortable, bodega-running shoes. And at the same time change into shoes that go during the day. It pairs with jeans and skirts and many dresses. Some of you are not wearing socks with your Uggs. And the inside probably smells like the sheep pasture they came from.

Katie Holmes Late last year, the actress rocked the media by wearing a tight tube top dress over a pair of jeans.

Was it ugly? Was it cute? Slowly but surely, the trend returned to the mainstream during this year as it did in the early days. But this time around, most of the dress-over-pants moments looked a little more seamless. Participants chose a monochromatic or tailored style.

I know this has been a major sticking point in the unrelenting Gen Z vs. Millennial internet beef. But I’m glad we’ve rediscovered low-rise jeans over the past few years. And this trend continues till 2023. I am one of them. Many people were fooled into thinking that I looked best in high-rise denim. Only to find jeans that sat just above my hips was my golden ticket. Who knew American Apparel would have seduced me all those years ago?
